Storm density over the Iroise Sea (2025)

A full year of Meteosat MTG-I1 Lightning Imager detections on a 0.025° grid, revealing where storms preferentially trigger over the Iroise Sea.

Each 0.025° cell (~2.8 km) counts the lightning flashes detected by the Lightning Imager on the Meteosat MTG-I1 satellite (EUMETSAT) over 2025. This kind of map quantifies a site’s storm exposure - a direct input for planning lightning-sensitive operations (lifting, mast work, helicopter operations).

The methodology (detection, quality filtering, grid aggregation, monthly maps and diurnal cycle) was developed for this kind of use case and applies to any offshore site; it is shown here on a public area as a demonstration.
